Saturday 7th June Conference

The Climate Challenge: a call to action
..Your invitation

Dear UNA-UK member or supporter,
UNA-UK has now received confirmation of funding from the Foreign &
Commonwealth Office towards one major conference on climate change in each
nation of the UK. The first conference will be held in Birmingham on 7
June; the second will be held in Belfast on 6 November. Two further
conferences are planned for later in 2008 and early 2009 – one in Wales
and the other in Scotland.
This is your invitation to the Birmingham conference.
'The Climate Challenge: a call to action' will take place from 10am to 4pm

on Saturday, 7 June 2008 at Birmingham Council House, Birmingham, B1 1BB
The conference - to feature expert speakers, interactive workshops and
information stalls - will evaluate what solutions are needed at the
international, national and local levels if the challenge of climate
change is to be met with necessary action. Lunch and refreshments will be
provided.

..What we'll be discussing

Much is riding on the outcome of United Nations-led negotiations towards a
global climate deal. Can a deal be brokered which is both robust and just?
How can the UN help vulnerable people adapt to inevitable climate change
and build resilience to its effects?
National governments bear responsibility for implementing policies to
reduce emissions. What is the UK government doing to promote a shift to a
low-carbon, high-growth economy at home? Could it do more to help British
business make the necessary changes?
Communities, businesses and individuals, too, need to take responsibility
for their practices. How is local government addressing the problem? What
steps can businesses take to make their operations more sustainable? What
can you do - as a voter and a consumer - to help tackle climate change?

..Registration instructions and more information

The conference is free and open to all, but subject to capacity. You are
urged to register early! You can do so online (click here to be taken to
the conference registration form) or by calling the Conference Coordinator
at UNA-UK on 020 7766 3448.
The Birmingham event is the first in a series of climate change
conferences being funded by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Further
details about the series, as well as information and campaigning
resources, can be found at www.una.org.uk/climate.
The conference is part of the inaugural Birmingham Climate Change
Festival. For more information about the festival, click here.
Please forward this e-mail on to any friends or colleagues who may be
